How to register for SBI net banking (YONO Net Banking)

Quick answer

  1. Type onlinesbi.sbi.bank.in in your browser and choose "New User Registration / Activation" under Personal Banking. This opens SBI's new personal banking page, headed "YONO SBI", at yonoretail.sbi.bank.in. You can also go there directly.
  2. Choose Register Now.
  3. Pick a mode of registration: Debit Card, YONO Mobile App, or Branch Activation.
  4. Enter your account number, the mobile number registered with SBI, and the captcha, then choose Proceed.
  5. Complete the check for the mode you picked and set your own username and password.

SBI's FAQ says you can generate your user ID and password instantly online and start banking immediately, without visiting a branch. If you have no debit card and do not use the YONO app, use Branch Activation or ask your branch for internet banking.

The old address www.onlinesbi.sbi still works but redirects to the new ".bank.in" addresses. SBI now calls the service YONO Net Banking.

Who can apply

SBI's FAQ says individuals having operative accounts with SBI can access YONO Net Banking. It also says a customer with only a live PPF or loan account, and no savings account, may log in.

From SBI's internet banking page:

  • All SBI branches are enabled for internet banking.
  • Each holder of a joint account with "Either or Survivor" operation may register as a user.
  • Accounts held at different branches need separate registration.

The mobile number you enter must be the one in SBI's records. The portal's own message says that if your number is different from SBI records, you must visit your home branch to update it.

Steps

Online with a debit card

  1. Go to yonoretail.sbi.bank.in (or reach it through onlinesbi.sbi.bank.in as above).
  2. Choose "Register Now". The page is headed "New User Registration" and asks you to choose a mode of registration.
  3. Choose "Debit Card", described on screen as "Register account by using one of your debit cards".
  4. On "Account Identification", enter the Account Number, Mobile Number and captcha. Choose "Proceed".
  5. The next step is named "Debit Card Authentication". Follow the prompts with your own card.
  6. Set your username and password when asked. The portal does not accept a username that matches your account name.
  7. Log in on the same page with the new username and password.

Online with the YONO mobile app

  1. On the New User Registration page, choose "YONO Mobile App", described as "Register account using your Yono Mobile App".
  2. Enter the Account Number, Mobile Number and captcha on "Account Identification" and choose "Proceed". The next step is named "Scan QR Code".
  3. Open the YONO mobile app and log in with your biometric, Face ID or MPIN.
  4. Tap your profile picture at the top left and select "YONO Web".
  5. Select the "Scan to register on YONO Web" option to open the scanner.
  6. Scan the QR code shown on the computer screen to authenticate the account.

Through the branch (no debit card)

  1. On the New User Registration page, choose "Branch Activation", described as "Register account by visiting the Branch".
  2. Enter the Account Number, Mobile Number and captcha and choose "Proceed". The next step is named "Set Username & Password".
  3. You get a reference number. The portal says it expires in 7 days, and that your account is activated once you give the reference number at the branch.
  4. Visit the branch within that time. The portal's text also refers to a "Branch Activation Code" that you enter to authenticate the account.

If the branch gave you a kit or a username

SBI's older process still exists. You apply at the branch with the internet banking registration form, and the branch gives a Pre-Printed Kit (PPK) with a username and password, or sends a username by SMS and the password by post.

  • If you have a PPK, the OnlineSBI home page tells you not to use the new user registration link. Enter the user id and password from the kit on the normal login screen.
  • If you received a username by SMS, the login page has "Activate Username". It asks for your account number and the username "sent through SMS on the registered mobile number".
  • A username and password given by the bank must be replaced with your own at the first login. SBI's older FAQ says the username cannot be changed after that.

Choosing a password

SBI's Password Management page sets these rules:

  • At least five different characters.
  • Characters from at least three types: upper case, lower case, digits, punctuation.
  • No run of letters in sequence longer than three, and no run of digits longer than two.
  • Not a dictionary word, a name, a phone number or a vehicle number.
  • Change it at least once every 90 days.

Forgot username, forgot password, locked user

ProblemOption on the login pageWhat it asks for
Forgot username"Forgot Username?"Account Number, Mobile Number, captcha
Forgot password"Forgot Password?"A mode of authentication: Debit Card, or Branch Activation
Lock your own access"Lock/Unlock User", then "Lock Access"Account Number, Mobile Number, captcha
Unlock"Lock/Unlock User", then "Unlock Access"Same details, then a verification method

The portal's lock notice says: "You will not be able to login. You can unlock access through Debit Card or through your branch." Its text also says that unlocking by debit card verification takes 12 hours for security reasons, and that ATM or branch verification is the route for immediate unlocking.

Fees

No fee for registering is mentioned on any SBI page opened for this guide. Charges for individual transactions made through net banking are in SBI's schedule of charges and are not covered here.

How long it takes

RouteTime
Debit Card or YONO Mobile AppSBI's FAQ says the user ID and password are generated instantly online
Branch ActivationYou must give the reference number at the branch within 7 days
Unlock by debit card verification12 hours
Password by post under the older processSBI's older FAQ says within 10 working days

How to check status

There is no status tracker for registration. If "Register Now" has worked, you can log in at once. For the branch route, ask the branch whether activation is done, then try to log in. SBI's contact centre numbers shown on the login page are 1800 1234 and 1800 2100 (toll free).

Common problems

  • Mobile number not matching. Update the number at your home branch first. Registration depends on it.
  • Old bookmark not working. Pages under the older retail address now redirect to the new login page. Use onlinesbi.sbi.bank.in or yonoretail.sbi.bank.in.
  • Already have a kit from the branch. Do not register again as a new user. Log in with the kit's user id and password.
  • Reference number expired. It is valid for 7 days. Start the Branch Activation mode again.
  • Username refused. It should not match your account name.
  • Locked out. Use "Lock/Unlock User" and "Unlock Access", or go to the branch. Debit card verification takes 12 hours.
  • Accounts at two branches. SBI's internet banking page says separate registration is required where accounts are at different branches.
  • You want to stop using it. The FAQ gives the path after login as: Hamburger, then "Update my security". The portal warns that after de-registration the username is defunct and you must register with a new username to use it again.

Safety

  • Type the address yourself. SBI's advice is to avoid reaching the site through a link in an email or another site, and to check the domain name.
  • SBI never asks for your user id, password, PIN or OTP by phone, SMS or email.
  • Do not use cyber cafes or shared computers for net banking. Log out and close the browser when done.
  • Report phishing to report.phishing@sbi.co.in or epg.cms@sbi.co.in.
  • For a transaction you did not make, the login page has "Report Unauthorized transaction".
