How to update address, mobile or name in Aadhaar

Address is the only detail you can change on the myAadhaar website, for Rs 75, and you need a mobile number already registered with Aadhaar. The Aadhaar app also changes address and, if you still hold the old number, the mobile number. Name, date of birth, gender, a first-time or lost mobile number, photo and biometrics are changed only at an Aadhaar centre.

Documents you need

Documents come from UIDAI's List IV (documents for update). They must be currently valid and in your own name. Carry originals to a centre; upload a clear colour scan online.

  • Address: one Proof of Address showing your name and the new address. Accepted examples: passport, voter ID, ration card with photo, electricity, water, gas, landline, postpaid mobile or broadband bill not older than 3 months, bank or post office passbook (stamped and signed) or account statement not older than 3 months, property tax receipt not older than 1 year, rent or lease agreement, registered sale deed, insurance policy within 1 year of issue. A driving licence is not accepted as address proof.
  • Address with no proof in your name: use the family member (Head of Family) method. A mother, father, legal guardian, spouse, child or sibling aged 18 or more, living at the same address, approves the request with their own Aadhaar.
  • Mobile number or email: no document.
  • Name: a Proof of Identity carrying the new name and your photo. For a change after marriage, a marriage certificate issued by the Central or State Government (add a photo identity proof in the old name if the certificate has no photograph). For a change of first name or full name, a Gazette notification plus an older identity proof in the name now on your Aadhaar.
  • Date of birth: below 18, a birth certificate is mandatory for resident Indians. At 18 and above, a birth certificate, passport, board or university marksheet, government service photo ID or pension document. If your Aadhaar date of birth was recorded from a birth certificate, only a corrected birth certificate with the same registration number is accepted. If it was recorded from another document, submit the corrected version of that document or a birth certificate.
  • Gender: the first update needs no document.

Steps

Online

Address on the myAadhaar portal

  1. Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click "Login". Enter your Aadhaar number, the captcha, and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
  2. Choose "Update Address". Pick either your own document or the family member's Aadhaar option.
  3. Type the new address in English. It is transliterated into your regional language; correct the transliteration if needed.
  4. Upload the address proof as a PDF or JPEG. For a passport or a rent or property agreement, upload all the relevant pages.
  5. Pay Rs 75 online.
  6. Download the acknowledgement (invoice). It carries the Service Request Number (SRN), which is also sent by SMS.

Address in the Aadhaar app

  1. Open the Aadhaar app and log in with your 6 digit PIN.
  2. Go to Services, then Address Update. If the app is registered on a number other than your Aadhaar number, verify by OTP first.
  3. Upload the document (JPG, PNG or PDF) and fill in the new address, or enter the family member's Aadhaar number and select your relation.
  4. Check the preview in English and the local language, complete Face Authentication and pay Rs 75.
  5. For the family member method, that person must approve it in their own Aadhaar app: Services, Family Member Request, enter the SRN, Approve.

Mobile number in the Aadhaar app

  1. This works only if a mobile number is already registered in Aadhaar and you can receive OTPs on it, or the app is registered on that same number.
  2. Verify the new number by OTP (and the old one too, if the app is on a different number), complete Face Authentication and pay the prescribed charge.

In person

  1. Find a centre with "Locate Enrolment Centre" on the portal or on the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal. You can use any centre in India, not only the one where you enrolled. Appointments for Aadhaar Seva Kendras are booked at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in.
  2. Fill the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update form (Form 1 for adults, Form 3 for ages 5 to under 18, Form 5 below 5). Tick "Update", write your Aadhaar number, and fill only the fields you want changed.
  3. Hand over the originals. The verifier checks them and the operator scans and returns them.
  4. The operator enters the change and you confirm it by biometric authentication. Read the screen carefully before you approve, in both languages.
  5. Pay the fee and take the acknowledgement slip. It carries the Update Request Number (URN) and shows the charge at the bottom.

Charges are the same at every centre in the country, including Aadhaar Seva Kendras. There is no refund if an online request is rejected. If payment goes through but no acknowledgement with an SRN is generated, the amount is refunded to your account within 21 days.

How long it takes

UIDAI says 90 per cent of update requests are completed within 30 days, and elsewhere that updates typically take 30 to 90 days depending on the type and the verification involved. Mobile number and address updates made through the Aadhaar app are processed in up to 30 days.

After a change of name, address, date of birth or gender, a fresh Aadhaar letter is posted to the address in Aadhaar. After a mobile or email update no letter is sent; you get only a notification. Once the update is approved you can download the new e-Aadhaar.

How to check status

  1. On the myAadhaar portal choose "Check Enrolment / Update Status".
  2. Select "SRN" for an online or app request, or "URN" or "Enrolment No" for a centre request, and enter the number from your acknowledgement with the captcha.
  3. If you are logged in, all your requests also appear under "Requests" on the dashboard. An online request can be cancelled there until it is picked up for processing, and the fee is refunded within 21 days.

Common problems

  • Online address request rejected for "invalid documents". UIDAI gives four reasons: the document is not on the accepted list, it is not in your name, the address typed does not match the address on the document, or the scan is not a clear colour image of the original.
  • No access to the registered mobile. Nothing can be done online. Visit a centre; no document and no old number are needed to register a new one.
  • Limit exceeded for name. After two changes, a further change needs a Gazette notification. Apply at a centre with the Gazette notification and an older identity proof; when the request is rejected for "limit exceeded", call 1947 or email help@uidai.gov.in with the EID and the documents and ask for exception processing through the UIDAI regional office.
  • Limit exceeded for date of birth. A second change is considered only in exceptional circumstances through the regional office. Call 1947 first.
  • Limit exceeded for gender. A further change needs a medical certificate or a transgender identity card and goes through the same exception route.
  • Wrong date of birth recorded from a false document. Under UIDAI's procedure dated 24 December 2025 such an Aadhaar can be deactivated, and reactivation requires a genuine, online-verifiable date of birth document with an affidavit. Use only genuine documents.
  • Update pending for more than 30 days, or wrongly rejected. File a complaint on the myAadhaar grievance page with the EID, URN or SRN, call 1947, or email help@uidai.gov.in.

FAQ

Can I change my mobile number in Aadhaar online?

Not on the myAadhaar website. It can be done in the Aadhaar app only if a number is already registered and you can still verify it. Otherwise go to an Aadhaar centre.

Can I change my name or date of birth in Aadhaar online?

No. UIDAI says the online service covers only address and document update. Name, date of birth, gender and email are updated at an Aadhaar centre.

How many times can I change my address in Aadhaar?

UIDAI's published limits cover name (twice), gender (once) and date of birth (once). It states no numeric limit for address. Each address update costs Rs 75.

How can I change my Aadhaar address without address proof?

Use the "family member's Aadhaar" option on the portal or app. A parent, legal guardian, spouse, child or sibling aged 18 or more at the same address confirms the request, and their Aadhaar address is copied to yours.

What is the fee for an Aadhaar update in 2026?

Rs 75 for any demographic update and Rs 125 for a biometric update, as per UIDAI's charges sheet. Updating your identity and address documents on the portal without changing details is free till 14 June 2027.

Do I get a new Aadhaar card after an update?

A new letter is posted after a change of name, address, date of birth or gender. Your Aadhaar number stays the same. You can also download the updated e-Aadhaar or order a PVC card after the update succeeds.

How do I change my surname after marriage?

At a centre, with a government-issued marriage certificate or any accepted photo identity proof in the new name. It counts as one of your two name changes.

How do I change the photo on my Aadhaar card?

Only at an Aadhaar centre, as a biometric update. UIDAI sets no limit on the number of photo updates, and the charge on its current charges sheet is Rs 125.

Will UIDAI update my details if I submit the request?

Not automatically. Every request is verified, and may be referred to state authorities, before it is accepted or rejected.
